My Car - Fleury loyal to the Detroit Three

Petrina Gentile, January 07, 2010

He won a Stanley Cup as a rookie with the Calgary Flames in 1989. Later, he captured a gold medal with the men's hockey team at the 2002 Olympics. But with his career highs came the lows.

Former NHL star Theo Fleury also battled a barrage of demons including alcoholism, drug addiction and has made allegations of sexual abuse by his former coach Graham James.

But Fleury has turned his life around and started over. He has drive, determination, and a new car to begin the journey – a 2010 Ford Flex Limited AWD SUV.

“I'm a bit of a traditionalist. Ford has been around a long time.

“I've driven lots of Ford products over the years and I'm super impressed with this one. I think this is the best model they've come out with,” says Fleury, who hung up his skates in 2009. Since then, he has been criss-crossing the country promoting his book, Playing with Fire.

Fleury's Flex is loaded to the nines. “There are so many bells and whistles. I'm a gadget guy so I like that stuff – where you can hook your iPod up to the car, you can Bluetooth your phone.

“I don't think you could put another thing on it. We even got our website logo on it so we use it for advertising,” says Fleury, who just started the Theo Fleury Foundation to support abused men; he's also a board member for 1in6, an American organization that helps men deal with sexual abuse. The 1in6 refers to the number of boys sexually abused before the age of 16.

His Flex is a special Everest Edition, which is exclusive to a dealership in Strathmore, Alta. It's named in honour of the dealership's owner, who climbed Mount Everest several times.
